Achieve Your Physical Therapy Business Goals in 2022

by | Feb 13, 2022 | New Graduates

It is just impossible to help your client achieve their goals if they don’t know what their goals are.
Client – “I want to be pain free.”
Me – “Unfortunately that is not going to happen. Pain is a part of the human experience and people who don’t feel pain don’t survive very long.”
Client – “You know what I mean.”
Me – “It doesn’t matter what I know. What matters is what you know. Do you really know what you want? I can’t help you get to where you want to be if you don’t know what you want.”
This is not a real conversation but it would be if I was talking to someone I cared about.
It is reflective of the conversations I often have with clinicians.
“What EXACTLY do you want?”
“Why EXACTLY do you want it?”
In most cases the answer is “I want enough money to feel safe. I want the freedom to treat patients if/when I want to treat patients, but I also want the freedom to do other things like travel, or spend time with family, or learn something new when I want to learn something new.”
Getting more new patients is poorly correlated with time freedom.
Once you understand the What and the Why you need to know your When.
When do you want it?
I want to run a sub-8 minutes mile. I know that’s not happening for 5 months based on what I can do today.
I want shoulder YouTube channel to get monetized. That isn’t happening in less than 12 months based on my historical performance and other channels. This knowledge keeps me from quitting at 11 months.
The person who wants enough money to feel safe, successful, and free might want it in 24 months vs someone else who is willing to get it in 10-years. These two people will need very different paths to their goals.
Starting a business requires a clear vision. An absolute destination in mind. An exit strategy and a map to get there.
Things will change along the way and you will make adjustments.
But letting a false destination confuse you will take you down the path of frustration and wreckage I see so many others go down.
