Start a Physical Therapy Podcast in 2022
In this article we will discuss:
#1 Jimmy McKay – PT Pintcast The Complete Healthcare Podcaster
Nobody understands the world of physical therapy better than a physical therapist and nobody understands how to start a physical therapy podcast better than Jimmy McKay.
What is Jimmy’s experience in communications?
- Jimmy was a rock DJ at K-Rock in New York.
- He is currently director of science communications at The Mount Sinai Hospital
- He is the Communications Coach for The Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy
- He is Chief Story Teller at PTPintcast.com
What does The Complete Healthcare Podcast teach?
This course is a living, breathing, project. It grows as you grow. Launched April 1, 2022 it covers all topics related to the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How of launching your podcast.
This course gives individual therapists like you a chance to be heard.
There is a community of listeners who need to hear the message you have to share. They just don’t know you exist yet.
Many of us started PT school with a passion and desire to help people. What better way is there to truly help others than to inform, inspire, education, and elevate individuals anywhere in the world who are suffering from pain, injury, or trauma.
Podcasting gives your message reach.
Someone somewhere in the world might need to hear your message and this platform might be the only way for your message to get to that person.

#2 Pat Flynn – Power-Up Podcasting
Pat Flynn has been podcasting and teaching others how to podcast for as long as I can remember. Smart Passive Income was one of the first podcasts I ever listened to as a young, hungry entrepreneur.
Pat has an inspiring story of how he got started and is a leading in what he does.
Pat’s Power-Up Podcasting is a great course, but it is not specific to the profession of physical therapy.
Why Start A PT Podcast in 2022?
Grow your audience!
Private practice owners and mobile therapists are always looking for ways to attract more new patients.
Kevin Kelly famously coined the term 1,000 True Fans.
Any physical therapist could earn a respectible living with an audience of 1,000 true fans. Your responsibility is to help that audience find you.
A podcast is a platform that allows you to interview referral sources and patients as a way to build relationships, share real-stories, and establish your tribe.
Expand Your Reach
While so many other therapists are paying Facebook and Google to put their sales message in front of people who most likely don’t want to see it, a podcast offers you the opportunity to put your message in front of the people who are searching for it.
Google, YouTube, and traditional podcast hosting platforms are where people go to find answers to thier questions. People go to these platforms to find solutions to their problems.
People rarely seek out paid ads in the same way.
Build a Stage
In a recent webinar with Jimmy McKay he mentioned how a podcast works like a stage. When you are the podcast host, you have built a stage to highlight the great things other people are doing.
Every time I have requested to interview a local surgeon or other referral source to highlight their practice and share information about their newest procedures I have always been greeted with enthusiasm.
Even when the surgeon was unavailable there was heart felt sincerety in the decline of my invitation.
Contrast that to when I would request 5-minutes of a surgeon’s time to share my clinic’s marketing message.
What Equipment Do I Need To Start A Physical Therapy Podcast
These days many physical therapists are starting podcasts for free.
Your smartphone most likely has a great onboard microphone.
I recommend using video and audio as a way to distribute your podcast across multiple platforms like iTunes, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and your website.
Zoom is a great option to record your podcasts. Zoom is free for a single user and automatically creates an audio file separate from the combined audio/video file.
Here is my equipment list with Amazon affiliate links:
Blue Yeti USB Microphone
PoP voice Professional Lavalier Lapel Microphone
Logitech BRIO UHD 4K Webcam

How to Publish Content Without Sacrificing Patient Care
Gary Vee famously says “Document, don’t create!”
What this means is don’t try to create highly polished podcasts with post production edits, audio leveling, etc. Instead, focus on capturing the real moments that already happen in your day.
If a patient asks you a question about a condition or intervention, turn your phone’s voice memo app on and record your response.
If you have a genuine desire to learn more about a local referral source’s services, then invite that referral source to be a featured guest on your show and ask those questions.
Authenticity
Your audience values authenticity. Nobody wants to be sold to.
The beauty of starting a physical therapy podcast is your audience is looking for education over entertainment.
If I want to know why my shoulder hurts I will sit through 10-minutes of poor audio to get the answer.
As your audience grows and your bank account follows you will be able to start outsourcing post production work.
Wrap-up
The final question is… “Where do I start?”
In Jimmy McKay’s podcasting course he helps you find your starting place. It can be as simple as punching fear in the face and just press record, but without a clear understand of the who, what, when, where, why, you will likely feel lost on the HOW.
